Life of Idli

Have you ever thought of how the different variants of the simple idly came about to existence?

Well, I wanted to run my mind on a wild imagination trail and see if I could spin a story about how it happened. Here goes my attempt..

Once upon a time, in the village of Ulundhurpettai, lived Mrs. Khushboo Idli And Mr.Thalluvandi Idli. They were happily married and had two kids named vellai idli and kutti idli. Vellai idli,6 years old was very naughty. He always invited the wrath of his mom with his mischievous activities whereas kutti idli,2 years old was a silent fellow.

One day, the idli family decided to take a walk alongside the banks of Sambar river. As usual the naughty vellai idli was too excited and as he saw a puddle of molagapodi on the way, he jumped straight into it and started playing. Appa idli and amma idli knew they won't be able to control vellai idli fellow so they let him be and settled for a short nap. Meanwhile kutty idli was exploring something close to the river and suddenly slipped into the river. Amma idli and appa idli were terrified. Appa idli stretched his hand to get hold of kutty idli but he was slipping off. Appa idli was too slippery on the surface so there was no friction to grab kutty idli. Amma idli shouted out loudly.

That's where vellai idli got an idea. He jumped out from the podi puddle and came running. He said "Appa, you are too slippery . Move aside, I have podi all over my body,i can easily pull kutty idli out" and he was right.

By the time kutty idli was out of the river saved by vellai idli, he was drenched all over in Sambar. Amma who all these days scolded vellai idli for being naughty was now proud of his presence of mind. But when she looked at him , he was covered all over with podi. He looked cute. Amd kutty idli looked even more cute drenched in sambar.So, amma khushboo Idli  thought of letting them be just as they were, in memory of the unforgettable incident of their life.

And thus were born the yummy and delicious podi idli and sambar idli.

The story ends here..And I can hear you saying "kolapasi la irukkumbodhu podi idli patthi ivlo periya story thevaiyaa?"
