Why can't I read?

I know a lot of voracious readers. Take for instance, my husband. He reads a new book every week, he reads two books in parallel sometimes. A total non-sync with me! Give me any book, short story or non-fiction or novel or anything, I can't read more than 5 pages at a stretch. The irony is I have owned a ridiculous collection of books and encyclopaedias since my school days. But I always stuck to reading comics like Tinkle and Archies.

Why can't I read? Do I lack the concentration to read through a story? Don't I have the patience to understand line by line and delve into a book's world? Low attention span? Recently, one of my college seniors posted a status update on similar lines. Just like me, he can never hook himself to a book and hence not use books as references in everyday conversations. I have the same problem. Hi-5! So, have people like us missed out on something in life?

Right when I was feeling bad about my ignorance about books and reading, I started realizing that each one of us have our own worlds that we hook ourselves to. A world where we find peace, a world which respects and boosts our self-esteem, a place where we focus our energies and make our time productive.

I started drawing and sketching again. The more I do this, the more I want to do more of it. I feel good about myself when I draw or sketch. It helps me forget all worries from the past, present and future. It takes me to another world that I enjoy being in. I want to discover new ways of making my kind of art. I want to explore new ways of bringing together traditional drawing with contemporary needs. I might be doing what has been explored already. But for me, it is a new path towards self-discovery. Just what books do to a voracious reader, right?

So, maybe I haven't missed out much in life by not reading.

This 2016, instead of worrying what I haven't done in life so far, I decided to do what I love to do and feel happy about being myself. Currently, it is about making art.

What activity do you do to focus your energy? All of us have one in our life, it just takes the right time to identify what it is. What activity makes you happy? Feel free to write in the comments section.

Wish you all a Happy New Year 2016!

Much love,
Haripriya
