Magic in a Box

Tringgggg..The interval bell rang at school. It was 10.10 AM and Suraj reached out to his snack box in the lunch bag. Within a matter of seconds, all his friends thronged his desk and sat around him. Almost the entire section of 4th std A section was around Suraj's desk. He carefully opened the snack box and began distributing what he had brought for the day.

Suraj's snacks were famous in his entire class and he was proud about it. Every evening he would return home to his grandmother to praise her and tell her how the snacks she makes were liked by everyone. Everyone were literally fighting to have a share during the interval time.

Suraj's parents were working and hence did not have the time to prepare any home made snacks . But, Suraj's grandma Seethamma made delicious and fresh snacks everyday. She was in her late 70s. She knew the recipes for age old authentic healthy snack items such as red rice murukku, ulundhu urundai, kadala mittaai, etc.

Till an year earlier, Suraj used to wait for his summer vacations when he could go to his native village where his grandmother resided. Suraj and his friends would play all day in the peak summer near the beautiful pond, climbing trees, walking across paddy fields and come home in the evening only to relish the tasty snacks made by grandma. Now, Suraj's grandmother had come to stay with him in the city for sometime. And since then, Suraj proudly packed his snacks box everyday to school.

During the festival season, Suraj's school always conducted carnivals with lots of contests and games. This year, Suraj had enrolled himself for the fireless and wireless cooking contest. He was confident because he had his grandma's support in learning few recipes that were easy to make. Although she was from the previous generation, she was against gender stereotypes. So, she always encouraged Suraj to help her in the kitchen. When Suraj told her that he was taking part in the fireless and wireless cooking contest, she already knew what recipes to teach him. She handheld him through a few recipes like the kadalamittaai (groundnut burfi), odacha kadalai urundai (roasted gram balls), etc. She also helped him prepare the pre-requisite ingredients from home for the contest.

On the day of the contest, everyone had come with ideas of making bread sandwiches and the like. Suraj prepared what he had learnt from Seethamma and undoubtedly stood out from the crowd. The judges for the day declared Suraj as the winner and he received a big box as prize. He wanted to take it home without opening so that Seethamma could joyfully open it to celebrate the victory.

That evening, when Suraj entered home with his prize in the hand, Seethamma was busy reading some letter in her hand. When he entered, she put down the letter and hugged him. Suraj could sense that Seethamma looked a bit disturbed, so to change her mood, he excitedly gave the box in hand to her. "I won the first prize for all the recipes you taught me for the contest. So you open it paatti", he said. As she removed the gift-wrap. she saw the words 'Snack Experts.. Healthy Snacking Unleashed' on the box. She opened the box to find 5 different packets of snacks inside. It said there were no artificial flavoring, no emulsifiers, no transfat, no hydrogenated oils. There was an awesome ensemble of snack packs inside including dry fruits mix, kodo millet crispies (millets murukku), red rice crispies (red rice murukku), original seed flapjack, chocolate flapjack (made of natural edible seeds and dry fruits, jaggery, honey, etc). She cut open the pack and tasted some of the snacks. They tasted as authentic as her preparations.

Seethamma's face, which was dull a few minutes back brightened up. Suraj was puzzled. He probed her on what happened. Seethamma explained that grandpa had sent a letter from the village saying he needs her help from now there and hence she had to go back to the village. She was worried on what Suraj would do for his snacks when she goes back. Luckily, she now knew snack experts would take care of her worries for Suraj. She took help from Suraj's mom to sign up for the snack subscription as well, on snackexperts.com.

Suraj had subscribed to a smart snacking package on snackexperts.com, great on taste and light on the pockets. Now even after grandma goes back to her native. he could carry snacks as authentic as his grandmom's.
